Skating in the New Year

Kate has been asking to go ice skating, so we decided to take her to the rink downtown today. The temps were in the mid-40s, which made it a perfect day to give it a try.

Daddy giving some pointers before they start.
Getting the hang of it--and loving every minute!
Trying it on her own.
Ooops!
I nabbed this "trainer" for her to try. She did a great job with it.

She was grinning the entire time she spent on the ice...even during the falls. What a great way to end 2011!
Happy New Year!

Christmas

This year, Christmas definitely seemed more of a season than a day. The entire month of December was filled with magic, as we watched everything through the kids' eyes.

In an attempt to keep Kate occupied until the evening on Christmas Eve, Jason ambitiously helped her make gingerbread men (from scratch!).
Andrew was super-pleased with this project, as you can tell by the hand gripping a cookie and the sneaky look on his face.
Finally, after hours of waiting, it was time to go to church (but not before a few photo attempts in front of the tree)!

After church, we went to Papa Jack & Grandma C's for a feast of crab legs and gift opening.

Kate's favorite gift of the evening: a treasure hunt that lead her to a newly redone "secret room" (complete with a markerboard, cup holders and her very own sign).
After a late evening, we were thrilled that both kids slept until almost 8 on Christmas morning! Once getting up, they wasted no time in opening gifts from Santa.
Kate got the monkey pillow-pet that she asked Santa for.
Not sure what was in this gift, but obviously someone was excited!

The Vogels arrived at our house Christmas afternoon for more gift opening.

Some favorite moments: Andrew squealing with delight when he opened a fire truck from Uncle Kevin, and Kate pumping her fist in the air and saying yes, yes when she opened up a four-pack of princess Barbies from Uncle Mike. (see facial expression below)
We feel truly blessed this holiday season.

Oh, Max

Definitely one of the best things about the holidays this season was the arrival of Max, the elf. He appeared on December 1st and has been causing mischief ever since. Each night he reports back to Santa, and the next morning we find him some place new. Kate always jumps out of bed to find him, and sighs "Oh, Max" when she sees the trouble he has found.

Riding the camel to see baby Jesus.
Caught in the act of snatching a treat.
Hiding in the tree with a letter from the Big Man himself.
Having a snowball fight with his pal, Reindeer.
Zip-lining on a candy cane.
Fishing from the shelf.
Playing hide & seek.
Relaxing in a bath of marshmallows.
Kate is already sad that Max will be returning to live at the North Pole on Christmas Eve, but he sure has been fun!!!

Holiday Lights

Last night we drove around the Jolly Holiday Lights display in Waterworks Park. The best part for the kids? They got to ride up front, and at times, help drive. Andrew took his turn first.
Then it was Kate's turn.
Then, to my amusement, both kids took a turn. It was a good preview of Daddy's job in about 12 years.
At the end of the display we visited Santa's workshop. This was the first year that Kate willingly went to talk to Santa.
And she even sat on his lap!
Andrew was terrified and just looking at Santa made him cry hysterically. Maybe next year!

Deck the Halls

Today we spent the day trimming the tree, hanging our stockings & setting out the nativity set.
Here is Kate hanging her favorite ornament: a blue fairy that daddy picked out for her last year.
Andrew, who always seems to catch on quickly, started to help unpack the ornaments.
He then tried to put them on the tree, but was unable to hook them on the branches. See that blue bulb above his head? Shortly after this picture was taken, its life came to a shattering end when Andrew decided to walk around with it & dropped it on the floor. Our Christmas tree is now clear of ornaments below the 2 foot level.
Is it just me, or do these 2 look so old in this photo?!
Light fascination...
...and silliness.
Sweet girl (she knows Santa is watching).
Love.
